Basic Rule of Biblical interpretation:
The following should be a basic rule of Biblical interpretation: Let the Bible speak for itself and follow the plain meaning of the text.
If the Bible truly is the Word of God, it is capable of speaking across time to all generations and peoples.
There are so-called scholars who try to make the Bible a product of one particular culture. You must know that culture's language and be an expert in the customs of the era to understand the Bible. Nonsense! That might be true for a mere human book, but is not the case with the Bible, and, in particular, the New Testament.
Anyone can understand the New Testament if that person will simply read it as it is and allow it to speak for itself.
Most people, however, don't do that. They put the teachings of their church or manmade theological systems ahead of the Bible.
If I read the Bible for itself, would I ever be a calvinist or a dispensationalist? No. Never. A calvinist reads john calvin. A dispie reads scofield. The reader then allows those two to cherry pick the verses to be considered and allows those two to dictate how those verses are to be interpreted.
Honestly, just put the commentaries away and read the New Testament in its entirety and let it speak for itself.
